REORDER OR RESTORE ORDER; but NOT CREATE a new church.
In June of 1852, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, members in scattered branches of the Church which had been restored on earth through the martyr Joseph Smith in 1830, brought together branches in a conference to bring order to an unorganized condition. They were not forming a new church. "There was no intention at this time of organizing a new church, but these men were acting as members and officers of the original church, regulating and setting in order the church...” (CH, Vol 3: 211). The first conference of the Reorganization enacted nine resolutions to further unite themselves together as the church of Jesus Christ (CH, Vol 3:209-211). There were no ordinations to higher priesthood offices. The conference had no control over branches other than what the branches gave it. As in 1852, Priesthood of the church across the land are listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and responding with an assurance of the blessing of the Lord in calling for a Conference of Branches. A Conference of Branches today, “if the Melchisedek priesthood is present in any of its offices,” has “the right to organize, or to reorganize; the power to establish, build up, and confirm all the church are there; and, if directed by the command of God, to perform all the work necessary.” (Foundations of Reorganization, Joseph Smith III, CH 5:348.) Thus it can bring some order to the chaos that the church finds itself in. Bringing about an organized condition in the church to where some order is restored among the branches is not creating a new church. It was not a new church then; it is not organizing a new church today. It is a response to the call of Jesus Christ.
ANSWER THE QUESTIONS, "WHO IS THE CHURCH?" and "WHO ARE ITS MEMBERS."
A Conference of Branches gives the Saints the forum to:
- Identify and proclaim themselves as the body of Jesus Christ; to be the lawful succession of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- Claim all the rights and privileges as legal heirs of the RLDS church.
- Provide a corporate body in which the international branches and the branches of the United States can affiliate as members and branches of ONE church. In today’s condition, it is difficult for the churches in foreign lands to identify who their brothers and sisters are. When so far away, it is very hard for them to have a sense of belonging to and being part of a unified church.
- Provide a united testimony:
1) to the Lord, from a United Body, for His joy;
2) to those within the Church, that we ARE the church; one in heart, mind, and spirit;
3) to the world, that it might once again know the true church of Jesus Christ.
BRING RECOGNITION TO MEMBERSHIP AND AUTHORIZED PRIESTHOOD OF THE CHURCH.
A Conference of Branches may give assurance as to who are recognized members and authoritative priesthood as exchanges of ministry and the transfer of members from one branch to another occur.
ASSURE UNITY OF DOCTRINE.
The church has witnessed how easy it is for independent branches to create divergent interpretations of doctrine. A Conference of Restoration Branches may help maintain a consistent interpretation of doctrine among the branches.
BRING ABOUT COOPERATIVE INTER-BRANCH ACTIVITIES.
A Conference of Branches may bring to pass the reality of coming together in a variety of church activities; for example: Reunions, Retreats, Youth Camps, Zion-Building Associations, Storehouse, Credit Union, etc.
BRING ABOUT THE MEANS OF TAKING THE GOSPEL INTO THE WORLD.
A Conference of Branches gives the church the ability to: Develop and establish a united missionary plan that can and will be supported by those who approve it; and pull together resources, both physical and financial, so that missionary work can and will be done.
REACH OUT TO AND GATHER IN THE SCATTERED BRANCHES AS THEY CHOOSE TO COME.
Christ established a body “fitly joined together”. The body of the church today lays in separated parts… legs there, feet over here, hands there, etc. A Conference of Branches can bring healing to the body.
